European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
