Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
